The New Blood of Ehrenfeld: A Sonic Assault at the Ballroom
There’s a specific kind of magic that happens in the Sonic Ballroom. It’s the smell of decades-old beer, the low-hanging ceiling, and the feeling that at any moment, the walls might just sweat themselves into a puddle. Last night, that sweat was jump-started by FUZZ WAR, a “fresh-from-the-garage” hardcore punk outfit that didn’t just open the night—they practically demolished the stage for whoever had to follow.
The Atmosphere
While the Ballroom is a legendary staple of the Cologne punk scene, it can be a tough room for a new band. The crowd starts at the bar, skeptical and nursing their Kölsch. But when FUZZ WAR plugged in, the conversation stopped. There was no “warm-up” period. From the first chord, it was clear that this band took their name seriously: a thick, suffocating wall of distortion that felt less like a melody and more like a physical force.
The Performance
FUZZ WAR plays a brand of hardcore that feels dangerously unhinged yet mathematically precise. Think of the raw, abrasive energy of early Black Flag mixed with the pedal-burning sludge of Ty Segall.
